Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening has become a widely-used method for improving the appearance of discolored or yellowed teeth. This is an effective and safe way to enhance aesthetics.
1. Causes of Teeth Staining
Extrinsic Staining: Caused by food, beverages, or smoking. Dark-colored foods such as tea, coffee, fruit juices, and red wine can leave color particles that stick to the teeth. Over time, these particles penetrate the enamel and dentin, making the teeth visibly darker.
Intrinsic Staining: The stain originates from within the tooth due to factors such as dead pulp, chemical exposure via the bloodstream, aging, or genetics.

There are many methods for teeth whitening, such as using natural foods, whitening toothpaste, whitening gels, whitening strips, mouthwashes, custom whitening trays, and professional whitening treatments at the dental office. The two most common methods are at-home whitening with trays and in-office whitening under the supervision of a dentist.
At-home Whitening with Trays:
Our dentist takes a mold of your teeth and creates a clear plastic tray tailored to your dental structure. The patient is then guided to apply the whitening gel and clean the teeth at home. This method is suitable for mild staining, such as extrinsic stains, yellow teeth, or age-related discoloration.
In-office Teeth Whitening:
This method uses a high-concentration whitening gel (35-37%) that works either by itself or is activated with a strong light or laser. The gums and soft tissues are carefully isolated and protected. This technique is recommended for severe discoloration, such as dark yellow stains, tetracycline staining, fluorosis, etc., which cannot be treated with lighter whitening gels. The main advantage of this method is its quick treatment time, usually within one session of about one hour.
3. Important Notes When Whitening Teeth
Whitening gel works only on natural teeth.
Crowns and dental veneers do not change color. You should be aware of this before undergoing treatment, and your dentist will discuss this with you. If there’s a significant color difference after whitening, you may need to replace the crowns.
Notes for Teeth Whitening at Home Dental – 30 Triệu Việt Vương
- Before whitening, tartar should be removed, and any plaque buildup cleaned. If there is any tooth erosion, fillings should be done, and sensitivity treatment should be provided if necessary.
- The whitening result depends on your age, the extent of staining, and whether the stain is extrinsic or intrinsic. For severe staining, you may need to combine both methods: in-office whitening and at-home tray whitening.
- Tooth sensitivity: Due to variations in tooth enamel, some patients may experience no sensitivity, mild sensitivity, or significant discomfort during treatment. If the sensitivity becomes too severe, treatment should be paused. Mild sensitivity is common and can be expected in about 60% of whitening cases.
